"The reason I got into this work was because my voice was put to death by trauma, too ."

When my closest mentor and trusted professional violin teacher began sexually grooming me in 9th grade , I didn't know how to escape ...

Each passing year, despite growing into a young woman who earned college music scholarships and played professionally with operas, ballets, and symphonies, my own identity felt more and more out of tune as this most recent abuser tightened the strings.

Upon leaving for university, my new independence sent his sickness into overdrive. Grooming became stalking. Veiled threats became overt demands.

It got so bad that after finally choking through my senior recital, I locked away my precious voice—my violin—in a basement gun safe for 15 years to pursue a career in Music Therapy instead, believing that I hated the sound of the violin.

I began to wonder if I would ever feel that part of my youthful, innocent, passionate voice echo through my soul again...

I mustered up my courage , stretched my tiny wings, and chose to use my voice...

Suddenly, while leading a women’s group therapy session, a patient requested to hear the violin. The song I chose happened to be one that instantly transported my heart back to the age of 12, and I couldn’t stop weeping in front of my own patients.

I didn’t hate the sound—I craved it. That night, I mustered the courage to open the gun safe in the basement...

I've gone on to create The SOJOLO Method - a form of Musical Mothering. I teach people to give themselves permission to be held and nourished without fear of abuse ...

Five minutes after touching the bow to the decaying strings, I realized a calm had descended within me—one that medication had never been able to bring. Instinctively, I created a soundscape that gently wooed my heart back into tune and provided deep nourishment.

Since then, I have reintegrated the violin into my therapy practice, composing lyrical soundscapes with clients that reach the parts of their healing souls that can’t be touched by talk therapy or medication alone.

My voice—my instrument—and the beautiful SOJOLO Music Therapy method are there for me whenever I need a quiet touch that tells my spirit " It's OK" .
